This policy explains how Africa Center ("we", "the site") handles information when you visit africacenter.net. We are an independent reference site; we do not run user accounts, paywalls, or e-commerce, and we do not knowingly handle data from children under 13.
1. Data we collect directly
When you simply read pages, the site itself does not ask you for any personal information. We do not run a contact form, a comments system, a newsletter signup, or a login. The only direct data we receive from you is anything you choose to put in an email when you write to [email protected]; that email is stored in our mailbox until the matter is resolved and is not shared with third parties.
2. Data collected automatically
Like most websites, the server that delivers Africa Center logs basic technical information for every request:
- IP address (used to deliver the page and detect abuse).
- Browser user-agent string.
- The URL you requested and the URL you came from (HTTP referrer, when sent).
- Timestamp of the request.
These access logs are kept for a short retention window for security and debugging, and are not used to build profiles or to advertise to you directly.
3. Cookies and similar technologies
Africa Center itself does not set tracking cookies. Cookies on this site come from two third parties listed below, and only when you have not blocked them at the browser level. For full details, including cookie names and lifetimes, see our cookie policy.
4. Analytics — Google Analytics 4
We use Google Analytics 4 (measurement ID present in the page source) to count page views and understand which content readers find useful. Google Analytics receives your truncated IP address, the page URL, basic device information, and an analytics-cookie identifier. Google processes this data on our behalf as a data processor; you can read Google's own description in their "How Google uses information from sites that use our services" document.
If you would prefer not to be counted, you can install Google's Analytics opt-out browser add-on, or block analytics cookies in your browser settings.
5. Advertising — Google AdSense
This site participates in the Google AdSense advertising programme. Google, as a third-party vendor, uses cookies (including the DoubleClick cookie) to serve ads based on your prior visits to this and other websites. This is what Google calls "personalised advertising".
You have direct control over how Google personalises ads to you:
- Visit Google Ad Settings to turn personalised advertising on or off and review which interests Google has associated with your account.
- Visit aboutads.info/choices (US) or YourOnlineChoices (EU) to opt out of third-party vendors' use of cookies for personalised advertising more broadly.
Even when personalised ads are off, you may still see ads — they will just be selected based on the page content rather than your browsing history. For more about Google's advertising practices, see Google's advertising and privacy policy.
6. Third-party services embedded on this site
A small number of third-party domains may load resources when you view our pages:
- Google Fonts (
fonts.googleapis.com,fonts.gstatic.com) for typography. - OpenStreetMap tile servers when you visit the interactive map page.
- Leaflet JavaScript and CSS, served from the
unpkg.comCDN. - Google Tag Manager / Analytics as described above.
- Google AdSense as described above.
Each of these vendors operates under its own privacy policy and may receive your IP address simply by virtue of serving the request.
7. Your rights under GDPR (EEA / UK)
If you are in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, or another jurisdiction with comparable rules, you have rights regarding any personal data we hold about you. Because we do not maintain user accounts, the data we hold is limited to email correspondence you initiate and short-lived server logs. You can ask us to:
- Confirm what data we hold relating to you (right of access).
- Correct inaccurate data (right of rectification).
- Delete your email correspondence and any associated logs (right to erasure), subject to legal retention requirements.
- Restrict or object to processing (rights of restriction and objection).
To exercise any of these rights, write to [email protected]. The legal basis for the limited processing we do is legitimate interest in operating the site safely and improving its content. You may also lodge a complaint with the supervisory authority in your country.
8. Your rights under CCPA / CPRA (California)
If you are a California resident, the California Consumer Privacy Act and the California Privacy Rights Act give you the rights to know what personal information is collected about you, to request deletion, to correct inaccuracies, and to opt out of the "sale" or "sharing" of personal information. Africa Center does not sell personal information in the conventional sense; however, the use of advertising cookies described above may be considered "sharing" under the CPRA. You can exercise an opt-out by following the Google Ad Settings and YourOnlineChoices links in section 5 above, or by enabling Global Privacy Control (GPC) in a supporting browser.
9. Data retention
Server access logs are retained for a short operational window and then aggregated or deleted. Email correspondence is retained until the matter you raised is resolved and then deleted, unless you ask us to keep a thread for ongoing reference. Analytics data is governed by Google's retention setting (we use the shortest available period).
10. International data transfers
The third-party vendors listed in section 6 may process data on servers located outside your country, including in the United States. They publish their own safeguards (Standard Contractual Clauses, Data Privacy Framework certifications, etc.); links to each vendor's privacy policy are provided in this document.
11. Children's privacy
Africa Center is a general-audience reference site and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has sent us personal information, please write to [email protected] and we will delete it.
12. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy when the technical setup of the site changes — for example, if we add or remove a vendor. Material changes will be reflected by a new "Last reviewed" date below and, where the change affects how cookies or advertising work, an update to the cookie policy as well. Revisiting this page from time to time is the best way to stay current.
13. Contact for privacy questions
For any privacy-related question, including data-access or deletion requests, write to [email protected] with "Privacy" in the subject line. We will reply within a reasonable timeframe and, where required by law, within the statutory deadline.
Governing law: [Jurisdiction] — to be specified by the publisher.
