Our Mission
Africa Center serves as the visual reference for African data, transforming complex statistics into clear, interactive visualizations. We aggregate fragmented data from authoritative sources and present it through a clean, fast, mobile-friendly interface that serves researchers, journalists, investors, and policymakers.
The Problem We Solve
Data on Africa is often scattered across heavy PDF reports, paywalled databases, and outdated government websites. Researchers waste hours searching for basic statistics. Journalists struggle to find citation-ready facts. Students can't access visual learning materials.
Africa Center changes this. We provide instant access to comprehensive, up-to-date data for all 54 African countries in formats that are easy to understand, cite, and share.
Our Values
Every data point is sourced from authoritative organizations and regularly updated.
Lightning-fast load times with offline support for reliable access anywhere.
Designed for the mobile-first African internet, working perfectly on any device.
Built for researchers, journalists, students, and decision-makers who need data fast.
All data is free to access, download, and use with proper citation.
Complex data transformed into clear, interactive charts and maps.
Data Sources
We aggregate data from the most authoritative sources:
- World Bank - Primary economic and development indicators
- International Monetary Fund (IMF) - GDP, economic forecasts, and fiscal data
- United Nations Statistics Division - Population, health, and social indicators
- African Development Bank - Regional economic data and infrastructure metrics
- National Statistics Offices - Country-specific data from official government sources
- WHO & UNESCO - Health and education statistics
Methodology
Data Collection
We use a systematic approach to data collection, prioritizing the most recent available data from primary sources. When multiple sources provide different figures, we use the following hierarchy:
- Official national statistics (most recent census or survey)
- World Bank / IMF estimates
- UN agency data
- Regional organization reports (AU, regional economic communities)
Update Frequency
Our database is updated monthly, with critical indicators like GDP and population refreshed as soon as new data becomes available. Each dataset includes a "last updated" timestamp for transparency.
Data Validation
All data undergoes validation checks for consistency and accuracy. We cross-reference multiple sources and flag any significant discrepancies for manual review.
Editorial Approach
Africa Center is built and maintained as an independent, non-commercial reference. Editorial decisions follow three principles:
- Primary sources first. Country-level figures are taken directly from World Bank, IMF, UN agency and national statistics-office releases — not from aggregators that may already have transformed the data.
- One number per indicator per country. Where sources disagree, we pick the most recent official release and disclose which one we used in the methodology.
- Visible review dates. Each substantive page carries a "Last reviewed" date so readers can judge how current a figure is.
The site does not publish opinion pieces, country rankings driven by editorial judgement, or projections. It compiles measured indicators that have already been published by recognised statistical bodies.
Technology Stack
Africa Center is built as a static site for maximum performance and reliability:
- Frontend: Vanilla JavaScript, optimized CSS, semantic HTML5
- Data Visualization: Apache ECharts, Leaflet.js for maps
- Performance: Service Worker for offline support, lazy loading
- SEO: Structured data (Schema.org), programmatic page generation
- Hosting: CDN distribution for global fast access
